The Beautiful Church of Saint Panteleimonas in Agathonissi Island

The must-see attractions:
In the early days the island was also known as Gaidouronisi due to its shape resembling a donkey (gaidaros=donkey). Its current name comes from the word Agathi which means thistle. But fear not, there are so much more to explore here!

  • Saint George is the port and Megalo Horio is the main settlement which was initially built to protect locals from the pirates’ attacks.
  • Mikro Horio with the imposing dodecanesian architecture and the church of Agios Panteleimonas is the second smaller settlement.
  • At the chapel of Saint Nikolas, you can visit the stunning Byzantine domes, Tholoi, used in the past as warehouses. Ask the locals about “votsos” located nearby, a gorge connecting the two sides of the island through underground tunnels.
  • If you come here in June, you will have the chance to see the Klidonas feast, an old ritual during which locals jump over fires to cleanse their spirit.
