HERAKLION

Crete’s capital Heraklion, or Iraklion, is a frantic city, the fifth largest in Greece. At Heraklion, visitors find their starting point to explore the sights of the island.

The history of the city goes back to Neolithic times and the area is full of Minoan, Byzantine, Turkish and Venetian traces. Rebuilding and development on the waterfront made the city more appealing and with a very dynamic and lively centre. The access to nearby Minoan ruins of the ancient city of Knossos and to major holiday resorts of the island is easy from Heraklion.

Outside the city, olive trees and vines are dominant on the landscape.
