What to visit

  • Count the stars that decorate the dome of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Despite its name, there is solid evidence that empress Galla isn’t buried there. Hide a guide to learn the story of this, the independent and dynamic daughter of Theodosius the Great.
  • At the catholic Neonian Baptistery, the interior walls are decorated with amazing mosaics, depicting the Baptism of Christ at Jordan river.
  • The construction of the Basilica of San Vitale that was completed in 548 A.D. is an example of fine architecture.
  • The 3 monuments mentioned above along with 5 more are UNESCO World Heritage Monuments. These are the Arian Baptistery that has an octagonal shape, the Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe, the Archiepiscopal Chapel, the New Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare and the Mausoleum of Theodoric.
