Travemunde, the fishing village that became a glamorous port

The seaside city of Germany was founded in 1187 and until the 19th century, fishing was the main activity and source of income for its inhabitants. It’s a borough of Lubeck and a point where the Trave River meets the Baltic Sea and the Lubeck Bay. It’s the biggest port of Germany in the Baltic Sea that connects the country to Russia, Latvia, Sweden and Finland. Attractions in Travemunde
• The Sandskulpturen Travemünde is an exhibition of large sand sculptures, in an area of 2500 m2, at the port. The sculptures are made of 300 different kinds of sand and are inspired by the flora and fauna of the planet.
• The Industriemuseum Geschichtswerkstatt Herrenwyk is a small, sophisticated industrial museum, 6 km from the port.
• The Holstentor (Holsten Gate) is a gothic city gate that was built in 1464. It’s in Lubeck, 23 km from the port.
• Explore the charming city of Lubeck and its canals. In 1987 the city was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Beaches in Travemunde
• The Travemünde Strand is sandy and organized, just a short distance from the port. Here you will find cute wooden kiosks where you can sit and be protected from the sun during the hot summer months. There are many restaurants and cafes here and you can reach it by public transport.
• The Hundestrand Priwall is a dog friendly, sandy beach. It’s on the Priwall peninsula and you can reach it by boat.
• The Scharbeutzer Strand Ostsee is a long, sandy beach, 16 km from the port. You can see the sunset from the long wooden promenade or sit on a wooden kiosk and enjoy the view.

Activities in Travemunde
• See more than 2500 species from all over the world, at the aquarium Sea Life Timmendorfer Strand. There are also many educational activities here for children. It’s 12 km from the port.
• Enjoy hiking at the Nature Reserve Brodtener Steilufer. Follow the 4 km long trail that starts from Niendorf. You can cross it on foot or with a bicycle.
• Visit the bird park Vogelpark Niendorf, 10 km from the port. Here you can find the biggest variety of owls in the world, as well as 250 different bird species.

Access to Travemunde: You can reach the port of Travemunde by ferry, bus, train, car or plane. Lubeck’s airport is 40 km away from the port, while Hamburg’s airport is 90 km away.

Only in Travemunde: Travemunder Woche is a big annual event that takes place in the area every summer. Watch the sailing races and the festival by the river. Playgrounds, fireworks, live concerts are some of the events that take place along with the races.
