Nynashamn, the city that took part in the Olympic Games

The city started to grow in 1900 with the railway connection to the Swedish capital, Stockholm. 1912 was the year that Stockholm hosted the Olympic Games and Nynashamn was chosen as the best place for sailing races to take place. The small city is very close to the capital, a laid-back place with modern facilities. The port is close to parks and forests so you can easily be around a natural landscape.

Attractions in Nynashamn
• Visit the Mopedum, a Nostalgia Museum which is focused on the history of Sweden from 1952 to 1979.
• At the Railway Museum (Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum) you can see antique trains and locomotives.
• The Svandammsparken is a beautiful pond with swans and ducks, close to the railway station. During winter the pond freezes and people use it as an ice-skate ring.

• The Nickstabadet beach is one of the biggest camping sites in the area. The beach is public, and you can often see ducks strolling around.
• Knappelskär beach is secluded and rocky.
• Hamvik is a sandy, virgin beach that looks like a lake.

• Rent a bike to explore green paths and secluded coves.
• Visit the Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri brewery. It was established in 1997 and has won seven national awards. It opens only during the summer period and it’s 2 km from the port.
• Relax at the hotel spa in Nynäs Havsbad. It is perhaps one of the best in Sweden, with an outdoor jacuzzi that overlooks the sea.
• Make some time for a “fika”, a special ritual of the Swedish culture. It’s an essential break that people during the day with their friends and colleagues for coffee and a snack. It’s very important as fika helps them socialize every day and they always find time for it, even for a few minutes. According to the ritual, coffee must always be accompanied by a snack, like a cinnamon bun which was originally made in Sweden in 1920.

Visit the Chocolate House (ChokladHuset) and book an 1,5-hour chocolate and praline tasting or a chocolate and beverage tasting. It’s one of the oldest chocolate factories in Sweden, which produces ice cream, pralines and cakes. You will find it 500m from the port.
