Pserimos, the best waters of the Dodecanese

The small island belongs to the Dodecanese complex and is located between Kos and Kalymnos. It is also known as Kapari because the land is full of capers. Pserimos has a few inhabitants whose main activities are fishing and looking after the olive trees. Every summer many tourists arrive from Kos and Kalymnos to spend a few days in the numbered rooms to rent or just for a day trip.

Attractions in Pserimos

• Avlakia is the only settlement on the island. There aren’t any streets or cars, and you can move around on foot or by bike.
• The Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary (or Lady Brunette) is the biggest on the island. It took its name from the dark colour of the icon.
• The Chapel of Panagia Grafiotisa is on the west side of Pserimos, about 45 minutes from the port on foot.

Beaches in Pserimos

• Avlakia is the beach of the main settlement, at the port. It is sandy, protected from the winds and you will find a few sunbeds and umbrellas.
• Vathi is a beach that you can reach through hiking trails or by boat.
• Marathounda (or Marathondas) is on the north side of the island and it’s a 40-minute walk from the port.
• Grafiotissa is a secluded beach with sand and small pebbles.
• At Tafos beach there used to be a clay factory.

Activities in Pserimos

• Hike at the Pserimos Cavern.
• Swim to the Plati islet and enjoy snorkelling to see the crystal clean sunbed. The waters are said to be the cleanest in the Dodecanese.
• Organise a diving trip from Kos and Kalymnos to Pserimos and see the wrecks of two German ships.
• Visit the Pserimos Gorge, which used to be the path that workers went through to get to their jobs at the clay factory.

Access to Pserimos: You can reach the port on foot or with a sea taxi. The daily cruise boats depart from Kalymnos at 9 am and depart from Pserimos at 5 in the afternoon. You should have proper shoes for hiking and water.

Only in Pserimos: The 15th of August is a day of celebration on the island. It’s the only traditional panigiri (festival) that takes place in Pserimos at the Church of Virgin Mary Brunette, with fish plates and joyful locals that try to make this a day to remember for the tourists.
