La Gomera, the magic island where the rain falls horizontally

UNESCO sites, wind that cause rain to fall horizontally and not vertically, volcanic beaches, all this is waiting for you at this Spanish island on the Atlantic Ocean. La Gomera is part of the Canary Islands and its capital and main port is San Sebastian de la Gomera. The island is also known as “Isla Mágica” and has been declared by UNESCO as a “Biosphere Reserve”.

Attractions in La Gomera
• At the El Faro Museum, apart from the emblematic lighthouse, there is a small house at the bottom of it which houses the museum. It’s the spot with the most stunning sunrise.
• La Gomera Archaeology Museum (Museo Arqueológico de La Gomera) is a small museum at San Sebastian. Here you will find objects and you can watch video documentaries, related to the island’s history.
• Discover the special architecture and the amazing view on some of the island’s chapels: Ermita de San Isidro στο Alajero, Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Ermita del Buen Viaje de Taguluche are some of them.

Beaches in La Gomera
• Playa de San Sebastian has sand and crystal clean waters. In a short distance from there you will find shops and hotels.
• Playa De Avalo is secluded and rocky. The access is easy and parking is free.
• Playa del Medio is close to the La Gomera airport. It is pebbled and stretches in a long coastline.
• Playa del Inglés is the island’s most glamorous beach, surrounded by resorts and dunes. There is a nudist beach on the site and water sport facilities, like surfing.

Activities in La Gomera
• Don’t miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Garajonay National Park. In 1986 it was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Most of the area is covered by a rich laurel forest, one of the most important in the world. Hike at a scenery that reminds you of a fairytale. Alto de Garajonay is the highest peak on the island, and you can reach it by car or walk through the trails. When the sky is clear, you can see some of the Canary Islands on the horizon.
• Rent a boat to visit the Monumento Natural de Los Organos. The volcanic rocks the waves have sculpted over the years, create an outstanding landscape.
• Try the local cuisine and plates like the watercress soup (potaje de berros), and vieja, a local fish. Accompany your food with some of the local wines like the Forastera Gomera.

Access to La Gomera: You can reach the port by car, ferry, plane or bus. La Gomera’s airport is 35 km away.
Hermigua is 20 km from the port. San Sebastian de la Gomera to Hermigua is 30 minutes by car.
Alajeró is 35 km from the port. San Sebastian de la Gomera to Alajeró is 45 minutes by car.
Vallehermoso is 40 km from the port. San Sebastian de la Gomera to Vallehermoso is an hour by car.

Only in La Gomera: The locals here speak their own whistling language, called «Silbo gomero». Primary and secondary schools teach it as a compulsory lesson in order to preserve this tradition. The first inhabitants on the island started using this language and it was very useful to farmers and shepherds. Due to the complicated geography of the island, with the valleys and the ravines, they had to find a way to communicate. The silbo language is different from others as it uses lips, tongue, and hands. Since 1999 it has been declared by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
