La Palma, la Isla Bonita

The official name of the island is San Miguel de La Palma, but locals call it “Beautiful Island” or “La Isla Bonita”. It’s on the Atlantic Ocean and it belongs to the exotic Spanish island complex of the Canary Islands. Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital and main port of the island. Cumbre Vieja is the volcano of the island and its most recent activity was in 2021.

Attractions in La Palma
• Start your tour of the island from the Plaza de Espana, the central square of Santa Cruz de la Palma. It has Renaissance-style architecture and, for many, it’s the prettiest square of the Canary Islands.
• Enjoy a stunning view of the island from the Castle of the Virgin (Castillo de la Virgen) that was built in the 17th century.
• The Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (Centro de Visitantes del Roque de los Muchachos) is 2.396 m above sea level. There you can see Grantecan, one of the biggest telescopes in the world.
• The Banana Museum (Museo del Platano) is in Tezacorte, 35 km from the port. One of the main activities of the people in La Palma is the cultivation of bananas.
• At the Naval Museum (Museo Naval) you will see the replica of Santa Maria on which Columbus traveled to India. It’s the most visited museum on the island.
• Have a walk at neighborhood of The Colorful Balconies of Avenida Maritima (Balcones de la Avenida Marítima). These 19th century beauties are colourful, with special architectural features.

Beaches in La Palma
• Playa de Bajamar has black sand and many nearby cafés and restaurants.
• Playa de los Cancajos has shallow waters and volcanic sand. The beach is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.
• Puerto Naos is organized and has small pebbles. It’s a perfect spot if you like paragliding.
• Discover the natural pool Piscinas Naturales Charco Azul, 25 km from the port.

Activities in La Palma
• Visit the National Park Caldera de Taburiente (Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente), at the area where the volcano is found. Explore hiking trails through pine trees and waterfalls.
• At Los Tilos, you will find yourself in unspoilt nature and you will walk through forests, canyons and waterfalls.
• Go to the south end of the island at the salt lakes called Salinas de Fuencaliente. Explore them through the walking paths, see the lighthouse Faro de Fuencaliente, and swim at the small beach in front of the lighthouse.

Los Llianos de Aridane is 35 km from the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Santa Cruz de La Palma to Los Llianos de Aridane is 50 minutes by car and almost 2 hours by bus.
Brena Alta is 11 km from the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Santa Cruz de La Palma to Brena Alta is 20 minutes by car and an hour by bus.

Beach in La Palma

Only in La Palma: Have a unique diving experience at the Malpique coast. Dive into the sea and discover the 40 Sunken Crosses in Malpique commemorating the 40 missionaries who were murdered here by pirates in the 16th century. This area is a famous attraction for photographers who visit this impressive underwater graveyard.
