Puglia, the "heel" of boot-shaped Italy, is one of the most famous areas of the Italian South bursting with Mediterranean charm. Bari, Puglia's capital, and Lecce, the capital of baroque architecture considered to be the Florence of the South, are definitely worth visiting. Endless acres of land covered with olive trees will remind you of Greek villages. And the scattered trulli of dry stone huts - originally built as temporary settlements for the villagers who cultivated the land - may give you the impression that you're driving through a fairytale town. In Rione Monti you will find more than 1000 trulli. Do not forget to visit a medieval village in Alberobello, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Also, make sure to stop at Santa Maria di Leuca to enjoy diving in crystal clear waters and discover its velvety beaches.

Three hours away from Bari and about three and a half from Brindisi lies the mysterious city of Ancient Pompeii, which was buried intact under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Today, tourists can visit the archeological site of Pompeii's various parts, such as the Agora, the Street of Abundance and the Amphitheater. A few kilometers away is Mount Vesuvius volcano, which when it erupted it killed the people of Pompeii. Leave your car in the parking lot and follow the path leading to the volcano's crater.

Sicily. At the top of the volcano
Accessible by boat, Sicily is a place where many tourists prefer to go by car or motorcycle to better explore on their own. If you're one of them, the fastest route is Patras-Bari or Patras-Brindisi. From there, in about five hours you will reach Reggio, Calabria and cross to Messina by ferry.
The bustling island of Sicily offers beautiful beaches, Greek-speaking villages, impressive buildings with murals, stories from the Mafia and an active volcano. What else can one wish for! In Palermo, the capital of Sicily, visit Teatro Massimo, the biggest theater and opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe. Right on the Teatro Massimo stairs, scenes from the “Godfather – Part III” were shot. Make sure to take a trip to Mount Etna, to visit the highest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. If Etna is calm and there is no smoke, you may even be able to take a peek inside! How's that for a travel experience! On your way back, shake off the volcanic heat at the beach of San Vito Io Capo, west of Palermo. When back to the enchanting Italian city, try authentic gelato and say hello to real ice cream!
