It’s one of the Canary Islands in Spain and the second smallest island of the complex. It’s a volcanic island which since 2000 has been declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Global Geopark. Valverde is the capital and Puerto de la Estaca is the main port of the island.

Attractions in El Hierro

  • The Lighthouse Faro de Orchilla is on the westernmost point of the island, that used to be the end of the old world. Ptolemy marked this point as the zero meridian, a fact that explains why the island is also known as Meridian. In 1884 the zero meridian was moved to Greenwich.
  • The Ethnographic Museum (Museo Etnográfico Casa de Las Quinteras) is housed in a building made of stone and wood. The museum shares rich information about the island.
  • The Geological Interpretation Center (Centro de Interpretación Geológica)is in El Pinar and presents the geological evolution of the island.

  • Η Playa del Varadero has volcanic rocks and sand. It’s very close to the port.
  • Η Playa de la Caleta is close to hotels and the airport. It has 3 pools, free for the public.
  • Η Playa del Verodal is sandy and surrounded by tall rocks.
  • Η Playa de Timijiraque has volcanic sand, a small chapel and a restaurant.

Activities in El Hierro

  • Hiking to discover the different aspects of the island: Volcanic craters, areas covered with lava, pine forests. Discover the hiking trails in Sendero La Llania, La Hoya de los Carboneros, La Hoya Pequena, El Cucurucho and Los Hoyos de Casablanca.
  • Diving at the one of the most known places for divers in the world. El Hierro has more than 40 diving spots with transparent waters and volcanic underwater landscapes.
  • The  The Guinea Tunnel (Ecomuseo de Guinea) and the Centro de Recuperación de El Lagarto Gigante de El Hierro are in the same area, 20 km from the port. The volcanic tube is made of lava and is 90 metres long.

El Hierro, Access: : 
You can reach the port by car or bus. El Hierro’s Airport (Aeropuerto de El Hierro (VDE)) is 8 km from the port. La Frontera is 25 km from the port. Estaca to La Frontera is 30 minutes by car and 1,5 hours by bus. El Pinar is 35 km from the port. Estaca to El Pinar is 50 minutes by car.

Tip: So many natural pools, such a small island. It’s more than sure that you will find one during your time here. Some of them are Chargo Los Sargos, Charco Manso, Charco La Laja, La Maceta, Τamaduste, Pozo de las Calcosas and Charco Azul.
Try Quesadilla, the traditional dessert of the island made of cheese, eggs, lemon peel, sugar and cinnamon.
