Zakynthos (Zante)

Many people will tell you that Zakynthos is the ideal destination for beach parties going all night long. However, the “Flower of the Levant” has much more to offer, as it also caters to the romantic at heart…

Located close to the village of Laganas, approximately 13km from the city of Zakynthos, you will find the beach of Agios Sostis. This beautiful paradise-resembling beach is actually part of a rocky piece of land that’s connected to the island through a wooden bridge. You can get to Agios Sostis either by walking on the bridge or by boat. At night, when the bridge lights are lit, the whole place turns into an idyllic and very romantic wedding venue. This place has gained a lot of popularity among UK couples, ever since the British TV made a documentary on the islet and its church.

Ithaca (Ithaki)

The island of Ulysses and his faithful wife Penelope is known for its impressive old harbor, Vathy. Enclosed by the mountains of the island, Vathy looks more like a lake than a harbor. For couples in search of a unique wedding location, Ithaca may very well offer their dream venue: Lazareto, a small piece of land located right in the middle of Vathy bay. On the islet of Lazareto, the small chapel of the Transfiguration of the Savior (Metamorfosis tou Sotiros) that dates back to 1668, surrounded by tall pine trees offers the perfect backdrop for your wedding pictures. You’ll also have full privacy for your event since Lazareto is detached from the rest of the island and is accessible only by boat.

The bride arrives at Lazareto in a small boat decorated with flowers, garlands and ribbons, while it is customary that the boats huddling around at the harbor are honking their horns creating a festive and emotional experience. Celebrate the most important day with your friends and family on this beautiful island.

Kato Koufonisi

Can one get married on a deserted island? Actually, yes! Couples wishing for a super private and exclusive wedding ceremony can arrange to get married at the Chapel of Panagia on the uninhabited island of Kato Koufonisi. The couple and its guests arrive in elaborately decorated fishing boats from Ano Koufonisi, while local violinists escort the bride playing traditional music. The day after the wedding, as per the local custom of the “Antigamos”, the violinists wake up the newlyweds and the celebration continues until the night time.

A wedding at Koufonisia may have something of those celebrity weddings in Hawaii and other exotic places, but the accommodations, food, and ferry tickets will cost a lot less.

Santorini

Strolling down Santorini’s Caldera or Oia, you will run into a lot of brides and couples posing for their wedding pics. Santorini is a top wedding destination because of its world-famous stunning sunset as well as its luxurious hotels and suites that offer packages for an unforgettable honeymoon experience.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Anastasis Church) in Imerovigli, is a timeless choice for orthodox couples and many celebrities and had some of the most impressive and extravagant weddings there. The location of the church - on the top of the Caldera - makes for a breathtaking view. To get to the church, the couple and its guests have to walk uphill through the island’s picturesque narrow streets and alleys overlooking the Aegean Sea. If you want to make this experience totally mind-blowing, plan for a helicopter ride over the volcano with your significant other!

Skopelos

Ever since the Mamma Mia movie filmed there, there has been a record number of couples who choose to have their wedding on the verdant island of Skopelos. And how can they not! The Chapel of St. John (Agios Ioannis) in Kastri, silhouetted against the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, offers a magical setting to say “I do”. Just don’t wait until the last minute! It is said that you may need up to one year in advance to find an available date for your wedding. So start planning ahead!

On your big day, you will have to climb a total of 106 stairs to get to the chapel, but it’s all worth the effort. Once at the top, you will feel like a million box office Hollywood star gleaming with sheer joy!

Syros

The capital of the Cyclades, in addition to being elegantly beautiful, it also offers a unique location to have the most amazing beach party wedding: Galissas, and the whitewashed church of Agia Pakou, located at the top of the Galissas Hill. The spectacular view of the Aegean blue makes this location idyllic and one of the best choices to have your wedding. Nevertheless, if you’re not sold yet, here’s a second option: the Chapel of Agios Stefanos, largely unconventional as it has neither a dome or ceiling nor a floor. Consisting of just four small walls, the chapel was built by a fisherman, as a token of appreciation to God, who responded to his prayers and saved him from the tentacles of a giant octopus. During the first liturgy of the church “mastic” and “loukoumi” were offered. The tradition is still followed every December 26th and August 19th, when Agios Stefanos is celebrated. The Chapel of Agios Stefanos is one of the 20 best churches built in a cave! You can get there either by foot – it is about 15 minutes of a walk from the beach of Galissas - or by a boat. After the wedding ceremony, you can throw a fun beach reception at any of the seaside restaurants in Galissas and party all night long. However, if your dream wedding is more of an elegant and cosmopolitan event, Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros, features stunningly intricate churches, such as the Church of Agios Nikolaos at the Vaporia neighborhood, known for its beautiful one-of-a-kind mansions.

The white-domed Church of Panagia of Folegandros - the biggest church on the island - is built on a tall rock overlooking Chora, the capital of the island. It will take you a while to get up to the church, so pace yourself. Follow its zig-zag path and once at the top, enjoy the beautiful sunset that is sure to compensate you for every step you took to get there.
