Here are the best islands for unforgettable diving experiences in Greece:

Andros
176 km of beautiful coastline and a convenient proximity to the ports of Attica make this Cycladic paradise a popular choice for a short diving holiday. Laying under the waters of Andros you will find a German shipwreck from the Second World War (in Korthi, 40 km from the port of Gavrio). Visit the northernmost point of the island in order to discover the Cabrera shipwreck, resting peacefully here since 2016. If you simply want to put on your snorkelling mask and swim, or take some impressive photos the easy way, look out for the half-sunken Semiramis, on the beach of Vori, 27 km from the port of the island.

The tiny neighboring islands of Prasso, Tourliti, Megalo, Akamatis and Plati are also a good idea, since they are rich in underwater vegetation, found under the exotic palette of their waters. Many areas of Andros have been included in the NATURA 2000 network, that protects rare species of flora such as the Meadows of Posidonia.

Alonissos
This is considered to be the top diving destination in the Mediterranean, as it hosts the first underwater museum in Greece. Remember, these are the waters that the Mediterranean monk seal monachus monachus has chosen as its habitat!

The wreck of the neighboring islet of Peristera is a vivid encyclopedia of the Classical Period as it spreads over Alonissos and the surrounding islands. It carries 4.000 wine amphorae and other vessels and it was discovered accidentally by a local fisherman. This is the oldest shipwreck one can visit in the world! It is only limited to those who have a 30-meter diver's certification, but if you don't have one, there's always gorgeous beach Agios Petros on the east side of the island, that is accessible to everyone. Information on all diving schools can be found at the port of the island.

Kalymnos
Our list would not be complete without namedropping this, the ultimate sponge-diving island. The Kalymnians have lived off diving for ages, so their experience and knowledge of the waters is vast.

The Garden of the Amphorae is a magical diving spot with remnants of amphorae from shipwrecks showing up through beautifully formed rocks. The Labyrinth of Telendos is an underwater site with rocks, caves, corals, algae, arches and gorges that create a unique landscape. Finally, the Meteora of Kalymnos is exactly like the Meteora rocks on Greece's mainland: High and steep cliffs that host tons of fish, creating fascinating underwater formations.

Zante
"So how do I react if I suddenly discover a caretta caretta turtle swimming next to me?" This is a question commonly asked by anyone about to dive in Zante's waters. It is no secret the cute turtle comes to the island every year to lay its eggs on the inviting shores.

Luck can smile on you twice here, since apart from a turtle sighting, you might even cross paths with the monachus monachus seal that also strolls around the area. Limni Keriou beach is the most famous starting point for any diving expedition in Zante, its seabed filled with caves and rocks. But there is a bigger attraction in the «Fiore Levante» and that is none other than Navagio beach (known until 1982 as Agios Georgios). The ship "Panagiotis" was washed on the shore in 1980 and its trunk turned the beach into a beautiful site, the most popular Instagram spot of the Ionian Sea. It's not an underwater wreck but it would be a mistake on our part not to mention it!

Kea
Morphology, geographical location and biodiversity have created an attractive underwater kingdom on this, the small island of Kea (or Tzia). The largest shipwreck of the Aegean, the HMHS Britannic, was discovered here by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. It is a hospital ship, sister ship to the legendary Titanic. The French ocean liner S/S Burdigala that sunk in 1916, a German Junkers 52 from World War II with all of its equipment intact and undisturbed, and the Patris wheeled steamer that was on its way to Syros island, are a few more underwater sites you will want to visit while you are in gear. Koundouros bay is an ideal starting point for diving. Visit the island's diving center to find out about all the adventures that await and start planning your own underwater exploration.

Tours include the wreck of the cargo-ship Anna II, located near the beach of Lia, which is accessible only to experienced divers. The ship is almost intact, as it has been underwater only a few years (it sank in 1995). If you want to immerse yourself in history just a little more, join in on any diving center's visit to the Peloponnisos shipwreck, northeast of the island. It sank in 1926 and today it nestles 55 meters below the sea.

Leros
Keeping the best for last, this is the best you can get in underwater excitement in Greece, as it is considered the second-best shipwreck site after Normandy, holding some of the greatest treasures of the Mediterranean deep in its waters.

Along with the trunks of ships and planes you will swim alongside dolphins, bellows and seals. Leros has one of the richest Meadows of Posidonia, the grass of the sea. Some of the most important shipwrecks that are a must:

  • The German Amphibious boat type H warship, which sank on the island of Strongyli after many collisions on its rocks. It is located 20 meters below the sea and weather permitted it can be seen even above the water.
  • The Destroyer Queen Olga who sank in 1943 in Lakki bay.
  • The Arado Aircraft 196 sunk at Cape Mavrou Kavous at 20 meters, and it was transported to the point drifted by fishing boat nets.
  • Heinkel 111 is located in Belefuti at 17 meters.
  • Aircraft JU 52 is located northeast of Leros at 48 meters.

For nature lovers, there is also the cave of the rocky islet Piganousa that awaits to unravel its special biodiversity to underwater guests.
