Poros - Methana: An active volcano just 50 km away from Athens

The active volcano located on the Peninsula of Methana, a short distance from the island of Poros and close to Athens, has long been a pole of attraction for many nature lovers. The eruption of the volcano is likely to have taken place sometime between 277 - 240 BC. Today, there are at least 30 craters in Methana, the most impressive being the one located in the village of Kammeni Chora. You can also find several craters at the Epano Mouska area. Multiple eruptions of the volcano across time have strongly influenced the landform and soil morphology in the areas near Stavrologos and Makrylogos.

Since the volcano is considered active, much of the island has not been developed as a tourist destination. With that in mind, don’t expect to find out much if you ask for information at the port. Rather, your best bet is to explore the area by… foot. Follow the red markings from the Port of Methana all the way to Stavrologos and then take the yellow markings from Stavrologos leading up to the volcano.

The peninsula of Methana is also known for its hot springs that resulted from successive volcanic eruptions. Thermal baths - a source of health, wellness and beauty – can be found in various parts of the area such as Agioi Anargyroi and Agios Nikolaos. Make sure to visit them!

Even though Methana is technically not an island, you can combine your trip there with a visit to the island of Poros - which is also a volcanic island. It consists of two smaller islands, Kalaureia and Sphaeria, the latter also being of volcanic origin, separated by a sea channel. The main city (Chora) of Poros is built on top of a cone-like crater in Sphaeria.

Milos: Ferry me to the moon!

As soon as you lay eyes on the impressive lunar landscape of Sarakiniko, you can already tell that something truly spectacular must have happened here a long time ago. An island of volcanic origin, Milos boasts distinctive landscapes with unique explosion-made rock formations, texture and colors. And, even though the volcanic activity in the area stopped some 90,000 years ago, people today still marvel over the island’s distinct beauty of volcanic rocks scattered like sculptures all over the island as well as under the turquoise waters of the sea.

On the surface of the rocks at Sarakiniko Beach, one can observe the shell fossils, a testament to the constant transformation of these rocks across time. Some other geological wonders of the volcanic explosions that took place in the area are the many cliffs and caves of the island, such as the cave in Papafragkas and Sykia. While the volcano is considered active, you can see extinct craters in Fyriplaka and Trachilas.

Yet one more “gift” of the volcano to the island are its hot springs. Milos has plenty of hot springs, some being those in Aliki, Provatas and Kriopigi, where the water temperature gets as high as 60 degrees Celsius. If you want to learn more about the island’s morphology, rocks and mineral deposits, you can always visit the Milos Mining Museum (MMM).

There are frequent itineraries to Milos from the Port of Piraeus and many other ports of the Cycladic islands. Find out more and get your cheap ferry tickets to Milos at Let’s Ferry.

Nisyros: Enjoy a sunset overlooking the crater of the youngest Greek volcano

Nisyros welcomes you showcasing its ten active hydrothermal craters, a not-so-old last date of volcanic eruption and its famous “Stefanos”. The actual year of the last volcanic eruption was 1888. Stephanos is the nickname for the main crater of the volcano, which also has the largest hydrothermal vent in the world… and yes, you can visit it - but be careful! Much as you may want to experience this with all your senses, avoid walking barefoot or taking deep breaths. The hot rocks can burn your feet and the air emits a strong smell of sulfur. The most popular hot springs of Nisyros are Loutra and Paloi with temperatures ranging from 30 to 60 degrees Celsius.

To cool down from the heat of the volcanic lava, enjoy diving at the beaches of Mandraki, Avlaki and Agia Irini, that are very much representative of the island’s geology!

Right across from Nisyros is the islet of Giali, which a lot of people may have never heard of although it is a very active mining site. The islet may only have a permanent population of 20 people, but on a daily basis many more commute there to work at its pumice and perlite mines. Contrasting its tiny size, this place offers a plethora of exotic beaches, forests with pine and arbutus trees, an ancient cemetery and ruins of a settlement dating back to 4,000 BC!

The island of surprises is waiting for you to discover it. Go ahead and book your cheap ferry tickets to Nisyros at Let’s Ferry. Make your reservations online and get your tickets delivered at your door or pick them up at the port.

Santorini: Welcome to lava land

Santorini is already famous for is breathtaking sunset, which is rated one of the most beautiful in the world. But there is more to add to the island’s uniqueness: A volcano which is one of the biggest active submarine volcanoes in the world. The volcanic eruption that shaped the entire map of the Mediterranean Sea is estimated to have taken place during the Bronze Age (1613 - 1614BC). The tsunami caused by the volcanic activity is rumored to have reached Crete and to have eliminated several Minoan settlements in the coasts of the island. The shape of the island – which was called Strogili (meaning round in Greek) during the Antiquity because of its round shape - also changed to what it is today. The last time there was volcanic activity was in 1950, and the underwater Kolumbo volcano remains active.

Your Santorini vacation could not be complete without visiting the awe-inspiring volcano site! The most popular areas to do so are the uninhabited island of Nea Kameni where you can also find hot baths, and Palea Kameni. Boats and organized excursions run daily from the port of Santorini. Before visiting the volcano site, make sure to go to Perissa beach with its distinctive black sand and the Red Beach with its red-hued sand and vertical rocks. Both will give you a pretty good idea of how volcanic areas look like.
